H. Douglas Shepherd, IV is a Banking and Real Estate Attorney specializing in Foreclosure, Creditor’s rights and loss mitigation. Mr. Shepherd has dedicated his legal career to representing local, regional and national financial institutions to workout troubled loan relationships, document new loan relationships, audit loans with comprehensive loan reviews, and when necessary maximize recovery to the financial institution through enforcement of the Creditor’s rights utilizing litigation, foreclosure and all available contractual and statutorily created methods of recovery. His philosophy is to provide great service, tremendous value, and results. Mr. Shepherd does so by emphasizing client communication, utilizing all available technology and resources, and last, but certainly not least, good old fashion hard work.
Mr. Shepherd prides himself in three things (1) never being outworked, (2) always being prepared, and (3) completing all tasks as efficiently as possible. Value to the client and results take care of themselves when these 3 standards are followed. His goal is to represent his clients utilizing three underlying principles; (1) Understand the client’s ideal resolution and goals in order to represent the client’s best interest, (2) Maximize net recovery desired results, and client satisfaction by obtaining results efficiently, effectively and counseling clients on realistic expectations and the cost/risk analysis of certain courses of actions, and (3) Discharge his responsibilities in ethical, moral and professional manner, understanding that his actions are a reflection of his client, and treating all involved (clients, debtors, attorneys, court staff, judges) with the dignity, respect and courtesy that he expects from them, while at the same time being fully prepared to be assertive and aggressive to accomplish maximum recovery for his clients and fight for them.
Mr. Shepherd authored an article published in the Spring 2007 edition of the Michigan Land Title Association’s “The Title Examiner” regarding amendments to the Foreclosure by Advertisement Statute related to the Abandonment procedure. He also authored an article published in the Spring 2010 edition of the Michigan Land Title Association’s “The Title Examiner” regarding new requirements of the Foreclosure by Advertisement Statute related to required Mortgage Modification procedure prior to foreclosure. Doug has authored an informational handout for clients regarding “How to Choose the Form of Your New Business” and has regularly presented to clients on a variety of loss mitigation topics, including mortgage foreclosure, mortgage modification, forbearance agreements, collection litigation procedures, landlord tenant/evictions and loan documentation. Mr. Shepherd was a panelist at the 2011 Federal Bar Association – Bankruptcy Seminar.
While obtaining his undergraduate degree, Mr. Shepherd was the President of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Beta Omicron Chapter, was a 4 time letter winner and Team Captain of the Albion College Varsity Basketball Team. Mr. Shepherd was born and raised in Holly, Michigan (Holly High School) and was inducted into the Holly High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Doug is married to Mary Ann, and has two children. Doug’s hobbies include spending time with his family, kayaking and running.
